“Safeguarding”, “Breaking-Through” and “Surpassing” in the Construction of “New Liberal Arts” in China

Abstract: The innovation and construction of “New Liberal Arts” in recent years has aroused widespread concerns and discussions in the circles of education and social sciences in China. However, some issues have yet to be clarified and are still in the exploratory stage. Through extensive study and analysis on the related literature in the past three years, the paper proposes the principles of “safeguarding”, “breaking-through” and “surpassing” for the reform and construction of “New Liberal Arts”. “Safeguarding” means to uphold the essence and connotation of the disciplines of liberal arts. On the basis of it, it is suggested to “break through” outdated concepts of running colleges/universities, to break free from the confinement of administrative management of scientific research system, and break down the disciplinary barriers within/ between the humanities and social sciences and natural sciences. Thereafter, considering the advantages and characteristics of their disciplines comprehensively, colleges/universities should innovatively optimize their disciplinary positionings and layouts, talent cultivation mechanisms, teaching methods, and research approaches. Ultimately, “surpassing” is achieved through interdisciplinary integration and advancement of technology in the teaching and research of humanities and social sciences. This aims to better cultivate high-quality talents required by the country in the new era and better serve the society. In the reform and construction of “New Liberal Arts”, innovative measures taken by pioneering universities have provided useful references for other universities.

Abstract: This seminar paper is about the role of community engagement to help the internal displaced people in Ethiopia specifically Amhara region. Community engagement is a process of working collaboratively with and through groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interest, or similar situations to address issues affecting the wellbeing of those people. Internally displaced people (IDP) are those forced from their home by conflict or disaster but who seek safety in the same country rather than by crossing borders, meaning they are not technically refugees. The main purpose of the study was to assess the role of community engagement to help the homeless internal displaced people in Ethiopia specifically in Amhara Regional state in aspect of providing basic service, role related to coordinating the activity, providing training and personal development, in creating job opportunity and role related to recovery and rehabilitation of the internal people. Qualitative research approach was used in this study. The data was collected through structured interview question. the interview data was collected from Amhara National Regional State Disaster prevention and food coordination program office. The collected data was analyzed by thematic analysis and focus group discussion. Finally, the study finds and concludes that community engagements have the significant and vital roles to help the internal displaced people in every aspect more than the government.

Abstract: Street theatre in Zimbabwe has played a pivotal role in giving a critical commentary on the sociopolitical discourse. However the role of this art form has remained under researched. Over the years, the state has deployed confrontational and violent means to thwart any forms of dissent. This has necessitated street theatre practitioners to deploy non-confrontational and creative means to counter state excesses. Deploying James Scott’s theory of public and hidden transcripts, this research unveils some of the creative ways by which artists and practitioners have devised in order to deal with the state. This article analyses how street theatre plays a political watchdog role in Zimbabwe’s multilayered crisis. Whilst the paper argues that street theatre resists domination and the state in subtle ways. The research therefore examines the strategies that street theatre adopted so as to cautiously navigate power through the use of public and hidden transcripts. It also explores street theatre as resistance to other forms of dominance which are not necessarily political. The researcher examines thematic concerns, characterisation, and the use of song, dance and space as elements through which resistance is subtly communicated in street theatre.

Gender Versus Transgender: Transgender Communities at the Crosshairs

Abstract: Transgender as a gender is currently a worldwide topical issue. There are raging debates between those who are pro-transgender, fighting for the rights of the transgender people and those who are anti-transgender; fighting for traditional culture conservation; arguing that only the traditional male and female categories of gender must be observed. Include to the debates, the conflict between the South African Constitution and on the other hand, Christianity and the traditional cultural customs and values, then the debates become intense. The heterosexuals; being in the majority; tend to muzzle the voices of the minority transgender. This has bred insurmountable challenges for the transgender community. This paper illuminates the challenges encountered by transgender learners in South African schools as found by a recent study. Guided by the otherness theory; applying a qualitative research design and using questionnaires, observations and interviews to gather data from the purposively sampled students and staff, the study found that transgender learners were abused, discriminated against and stereotyped. The study also made some worrisome finding: that the transgender learners feared for their lives. These findings underline the importance of shifting from traditional approaches which define gender as a social construct, and pursuing perspectives that view gender as a biological construct.
