Abstract: This study aims to investigate the impact of the market share, according to the SCP hypothesis, technical efficiency, according to the ES hypothesis, and other control variables on the performance of insurance companies in Jordan. The study used panel data for 22 insurance companies operating in Jordan during 2000-2016. The authors used the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) and the concentration ratio (CR) to evaluate the Market structure of the insurance sector, Also employed market share as a proxy of the SCP hypothesis while efficiency score estimated using the DEA technique to proxy for the ES hypothesis, control variables were (Reinsurance, leverage, and Underwriting risk), while the dependent variable, performance was measured as return on assets. The model estimated using Random Effect GLS. The study found that the insurance market in Jordan is highly concentrated, where a few insurers control a large market share of premiums. Also, the result supports the (SCP) hypothesis for the insurance market in Jordan, and Reinsurance, leverage, and Underwriting Risk have a negative relationship with ROA. This is the first study -to the best author’s knowledge - to test SCP and ES hypothesis in the insurance sector in Jordan.

Abstract: This study investigates the impact of political instability on the economic growth in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Tunisia for the period of 1996-2016. The study examines the existence of the long-run relationship between different five political indicators and the growth of the economy. The study utilized panel data analysis, using annual data covering the period of 1996-2016, for the four selected Arab countries. The empirical results of the study, using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), highlight the impact of different political instability indicators on economic growth. Moreover, these results indicate that there is a strong long-run relationship between the several political indicators upon the economic growth. More specifically, the results show that the control of the corruption and the rule of law indicators have the highest impact on the economic growth, while the regulatory quality has the lowest.

Abstract: The main reason for livelihood diversification could be positive or negative factors like improving existing livelihoods, as copping strategy for changing climatic conditions landlessness due to population pressure in the rural areas. Agriculture as a sole livelihood activity in Sub-Saharan African countries in general and in Ethiopia in particular, is a failed activity due to the fact that agricultural sector in this region is highly characterized by decreasing farm sizes, low levels of output per farm, and a high degree of subsistence farming. In this research socioeconomic characteristics of the household and pattern of rural livelihoods were described and the contribution of non-farm and off-farm income sources in livelihood diversification and determinant factors were analyzed. Simpson diversification index was used to estimate the diversification status and accordingly 40% of the households were medium diversifiers and around 1% was highly diversifiers. Negative binomial regression model was used to identify determinants for number of non-farm activities and double-hurdle model was used to identify factors affecting participation and amount of earnings. Crop-livestock mixed farming is dominant activity while most farmers are involving in non-farm and off-farm income generating activities like petty trade, working on others farm, skilled handcrafting and carpenter, seasonal trading on crop and livestock etc. The main negative factors for participation were crop failure due to change in climate and shortage of farmland. Some of the pull factors which are due to seek for improved livelihood were mostly determined by educational and distance to town.

Abstract: This paper investigates the relationship between worker remittances and economic growth in a small country with volatile macroeconomic conditions (namely, Jordan). Previous research determines three main channels through which the impact of remittances can be transmitted: labor supply, capital accumulation and investment, and productivity. A historical behavior of these variables since 1976 to 2016 is analyzed and discussed in the context of the Jordanian economic structure. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model that allows economic growth (measured by growth in per capita GDP) and financial development (measured by bank credit) to be affected by their lagged values and by current and lagged values of remittances (measured by remittances as percentage of GDP) is used to test for equilibrating and long-term associations between remittances and economic growth and financial development indicators. The results show that although Jordanian worker remittances represent a vital source of financial flows, they are not used to smooth consumption by receiving households and have no impact on economic growth or financial development. Instead, they lead to increase in imports and trade deficit. Thus, if reverse migration of Jordanian workers takes place, it will lead to sudden increase in skilled labor supply, which will exacerbate Jordan’s unemployment problems.
