Abstract: The legend of King Arthur was embraced by two distinct groups of British and American artists during the nineteenth century. This paper explores the different approaches between the American Brandywine School painters, N. C. Wyeth and his mentor Howard Pyle, and British Pre-Raphaelites Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman-Hunt, John Waterhouse, John Everett Millais, and William Morris. The adventurous America spirit comes through in action-filled images created by the Brandywine School painters and their focus on heroism and the brave deeds of men reflect America’s unfettered enthusiasm. In contrast, the Pre-Raphaelites placed attention on the Arthurian damsels in distress, and laid emphasis on mythic heroines, confined in aesthetically pleasing settings. Embodying proper Victorian social structure, the Pre-Raphaelites deliberately promoted feminine gender expectations of passivity, whereas the Brandywine illustrators, with their emphasis on exploits of the active masculine figures, emphasized America’s can-do attitude and gave little consideration to the personhood of the female characters that populated the tales of King Arthur.

Abstract: For contemporary Ukrainian art, the time of war has become an occasion for the development of its vision of the national idea as a defining episteme, the process of approval of which began around the time of Ukraine gaining its independence in the 1990s, but was then suspended by the uncritical adaptation of the postmodern cultural-industrial paradigm, which was perceived a marker of belonging to the European family of developed democracies, while obviously ignoring the colonial-rudimentary patterns of Eurocentrism. The war has launched a transformation of cultural stratagems, during which certain types of older narratives typical of Ukrainian culture of the past decades and even centuries have been returning and becoming increasingly more important thanks to them re-actualizing the aesthetics that opposes those paradigms that tolerate a technocratic way of being marked by a commodified cognition, which also plays a significant role in nowadays’ Russian pan-imperial ideology. The decolonial metamorphoses of the art epistemes of the Ukrainian visual arts during the war may testify to essential changes in solving the crisis state of artistic and cultural theories and practices. The experience of Ukrainian artists proves that in stressful conditions, the nation has been able to consolidate its efforts and self-organize around the main imperatives of transcendental aesthetics, where the priority of artistic, creative ecstasy in the fulfillment of life-affirming meanings helps to defend the state sovereignty. This makes it possible to conclude that a new humanistic vector of the future civilizational development of culture might be being born: the one in which contemporary narratives of progress-based postmodernism lose their power, as well as the militaristically-chauvinist authoritarianism that is being aggressively planted in the Russian Federation.

Abstract: Designs in window curtains in Ghanaian homes, offices and markets generally portray elements associated with foreign culture. This phenomenon which has the tendency of swaging vulnerable minds for imported beliefs and ideologies could be tackled by providing alternative products which reflect Ghanaian philosophy and ideology. There are enough symbolism, techniques and resources suitable for producing window coverings to depict the cultural heritage of the people in Ghana. This study aimed to integrate ‘cuir-bouilli’, a leather molding technique and applique in fabric to produce Ghanaian symbolic window blinds and curtains. This dwells on the concept: of “promoting textiles through the projection of Ghanaian traditional symbols”. The study employed a human-centered design for practical experiments. This design is a step-by-step guide that requires working directly with end users of a product or service to develop new ideas that are feasible and appropriate in their context. The contextual information emanated largely from documentation, archival records, and observation of physical articles. In the process, locally made leather from sheep and goat skins was manipulated with ‘cuir-bouilli’ techniques to produce raised patterns which were further applied on fabric by applique technique to produce a window blind and a curtain. In the end, the study entreats students and artisans to explore the potential of the integration of moulded leather patterns and fabric for other artifacts.

Abstract: Multisensory approaches to contemporary art have become more popular in museums, galleries, and independent projects. This tendency indicates that in the arts, vision is losing its position at the head of the hierarchy of senses. Now, every sense can provide a conceptual message. This paper explores the relationship between visual and non-visual perception in a historical context. Starting with the revolutionary experiments of Dada, Surrealism, Futurism, and the Russian avant-garde, the first experiments in the 20th century were connected with the search for a new vision, helped along by critics of “retinal” art. Among diverse experimenters, Sadakichi Hartmann, Marcel Duchamp, Jean Arp, Wolfgang Paalen, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Vladimir Baranov-Rossine, and other innovators appealed to different senses. Pablo Picasso used blindness as a metaphor for his work. Hans Hartung, Arnulf Rainer, Alberto Giacometti, and Joseph Ginzburg used blind drawing as a creative method. The immersive and multisensory art of contemporaneity looks like the dream of avant-garde artists come true. The changing relationship between the artist, viewer, and work supports the development of new media and methods. Perceiving a work now often involves a multisensory experience connected to the reduction of sight: colorblindness, tunnel vision, or the domination of touch, scent, or movement. This text draws upon art history, phenomenology, and physiology to speak to the experiences of haptic vision and non-visual perception in exhibitions and art mediation with regard to inclusion projects in museums.

Abstract: Secured within the archival material of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art and New York Public Library is a more than twenty-year correspondence between the American artist Everett Shinn and his benefactor, Poultney Bigelow. Their letters include updates on the New York social scene and invitations for visits. Many of their exchanges also contain racist comments and derogatory references to women by Bigelow and bawdy sketches by Shinn. But one specific letter from October 1942 stands apart from the others for its length and tone. In it, the artist, in the guise of protector, confronts his patron’s sexually offensive behavior toward Jane Huttenloch, a career-minded young woman. Examination of this letter, their overall correspondence, and their lifestyles sheds light on a revealing and disturbing series of conversations between the men and highlights how deeply their patriarchal values informed their attitudes and treatment of women. This paper adds to the lexicon of the eroding ideology of chauvinism and addresses changing ideals of womanhood in the mid-twentieth century, underscoring the history and long-held traditions that led to the early twenty-first century’s #MeToo Movement when sexual predation is no longer condoned and men who belittle women can expect to be called out and castigated.
