Abstract: The main aim of the study was to assess the implications of mining practices on physical and socio-economic environment of Yubdo district, West Wollega Zone, Ethiopia. The study area was purposively selected and survey questionnaire were administered to 170 systematically selected respondents. The study has employed descriptive survey design. Both primary and secondary data were used for data collection. Data collection tools include field observation, questionnaire, Focus Group Discussions, interview and documentary review. Likert scoring method was used to rank the importance of the statement responded by the respondents. The results of these data were statistically analyzed and diagrammatically displayed in the forms of tables and percentage. The qualitative data were organized in to manageable size and analyzed qualitatively. The study found out that mining practices impacted the physical (land, forest, biodiversity, water resources) environment of Yubdo to the large extent. The study also revealed that the contribution of mining to socio-economic environment of the study area is insignificant. The study concludes that mining practices in the study area has negatively affected the physical and socio-economic environment of Yubdo environment. Based on the finding of this study, it is recommended that there is a need of enforcing the environmental regulations and laws so as to implement environmental management plan to mitigate the impacted area. The integration and collaboration of different stakeholders is very important to mitigate the negative effects associated with mining practices.

Abstract: The Suluh river basin is subjected to land use and land cover change due to population pressure, improper farming practices, lack of alternative non-farm activities, and rugged topography. Yet, land use/land cover change detection and its driving factors have not been applied in the study area. Thus, the current study detected land use and land use change and identified the drivers for it in the Suluh river basin, the northern highland part of Ethiopia. Landsat image data and Ancillary data sources were used to achieve the objectives. With the aid software’s of eCognition Developer 9.2 and IDRISI Selva 17.3, images were classified and changes were detected. Both qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed. According to the study's findings, between 1990 and 2018, cultivated land expanded by 7.98%, plantation land by 43.7%, built up land by 135.5%, and bar land by 9.8%. A decline trend was found to exist for water bodies by 79.6%, pasture land by 48.6%, shrub and bush land by 61.7%, and forest land by 576.7%. Thus, in order to implement sustainable land management practices in the Suluh river basin, land use planners should take into account information about land use and land cover change, as well as the corresponding drivers.

Abstract: The Association Agreement between Ukraine, on the one hand, and the European Union, the European Atomic Energy Community and their member states, on the other hand, requires Ukraine to bring its national legislation closer to EU law and policy. Environmental protection can be singled out as a separate direction. The article analyzes Ukraine's progress in fulfilling its obligations under the Association Agreement with the EU in the field of industrial pollution and technogenic threats and water resources management. The process of harmonization of the Ukraine legislation and the EU in the field of emissions control from large combustion plants is described. The specifics of the implementation of the Concept of state policy implementation in the field of industrial pollution provisions have been established. The analysis of the legislative acts of Ukraine regarding the reduction and control of industrial pollution was carried out. The problems of implementing the provisions of directives 2001/80/EU and 2010/75/EU into the Ukraine legislation are described. Significant disputes between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and business representatives in the field of industrial pollution control and prevention are indicated. The article provides information on the environmental policy of Ukraine in the field of water resources use and protection. Cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in this direction is carried out in accordance with Section V of Chapter 6 of the Association Agreement with the European Union. It is noted that the system of water resources integrated management based on the basin principle is being implemented in the country. The process of implementing the provisions of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EU into the legislation of Ukraine is described. The article presents the principles of developing river basin management plans, activities of Basin Councils, and procedures for state monitoring.
