Monitoring of Water Surfaces in the Nakanbe-Wayen Watershed: Case of Bam and Dem Lakes in Burkina Faso

Abstract: Spatial and temporal changes in the water surfaces of the Nakanbe-Wayen watershed influence, at the local and national levels, sustainable economic development. However, these changes in the basin remain poorly characterized. The present study, which aims at analyzing the spatio-temporal dynamics of the water surfaces of lakes Bam and Dem, two wetlands of international importance in the said watershed, exploited the processing power of the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to analyze 2121 Landsat image scenes over the period from 2000 to 2020. The water surfaces extraction algorithm, based on a combination of water and vegetation index, has been tested and adopted to rapidly extract the water surfaces of said wetlands. The results indicate that: (1) the water surfaces extraction method is well suited to that of Bam and Dem lakes; (2) the areas of water surfaces have a significant shrinking trend respectively -22.80 ha/year (P-value=0.0006) and -4.44 ha/year (P-value=0. 009) of the permanent surfaces of Bam Lake and Dem Lake from 2000 to 2020; (3) changes in the water surfaces of these lakes may be associated with climate change and human activities and should be studied in more detail. In view of the significant loss of water surfaces areas and the importance of lakes Bam and Dem for the communities and the environment, taking into account strong and concerted actions for restoration and conservation is urgent in order to perpetuate these natural spaces.

Abstract: The study was conducted in Shiekan locality in North Kordofan State, Sudan and aimed to identify, assess and mapping of the land use and land cover (LULC) changes and trends in the last three decades (1989 to 2019). Satellite imageries of Landsat 5 TM (1989) and (2009), Landsat 7 ETM+ (2000), and Landsat 8 OLI (2019), covering path and row 174/51 and 175/51 were acquired in dry seasons. Image pre-proccessig, image classification (maximum likelihood) and accuracy assessment were applied. Remotely sensed data were processed and analyzed using ERDAS 9.1 and ArcGIS10.0 software. Results showed that the LULC in Sheikan locality were identified into eight classes (water, trees, shrubs, sandy soil, gardud lands, agricultural lands, rangeland and bare soil, and residential). The trees class showed an increase from 2.36% (2000) to 2.51% (2009) and decreasing in 2019 (1.87%). While, classified imageries indicated an increase of agricultural land from 69.2% in 1989 to 72.2% in 2019 as dominant class, followed by shrub lands increased from 18% in 1989 to 23.1% in 2019 in Sheikan locality. The overall obtained accuracy for classified maps was 87.50%, 89.29%, 90.20%, and 80.77% for 1989, 2000, 2009, and 2019, respectively. The study revealed that expansion of agricultural lands, climate change and illicit felling of trees are the main reseaons for natural resources degradation, mainly forest and rangelands in Shiekan locality. Use of remote sensing and GIS in assessment and monitoring of natural resources in arid and semi-arid area is highly recommended.

Abstract: Social License to operate is an important tool for achieving successful oil operations in any community. Conflicts are constant happenings in the Niger Delta. These conflicts sometimes, get so severe occasioning destruction of property and avoidable killings. Conflicts between oil companies and host communities are mainly due to lack of Social License to operate This paper examined the impact of Social License on conflict management and oil pollution in the Niger Delta. The study was conducted in six communities, two each from Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa States respectively. These states have the highest incidence of oil pollution in the region. A simple random sampling technique was used to select households for the study. The sample size was 157. Structured Interview schedule constituted the instrument for data collection. The study identified low community involvement as the highest factor, amongst the main causes of conflict in the Niger Delta region, indicating that a high-level community involvement by way of Social License ensures a peaceful co-existence between oil companies and communities. The study also identified that though artisanal crude oil refining impacts negatively on the environment and livelihoods in the Niger Delta, host community members do not react violently or oppose its operations due to high level community involvement. This signifies Social License. It was thus recommended that operating oil companies in the Niger Delta region should have high level community involvement in their actions to avoid conflicts.

Abstract: Conservation and sustainable use strategies for reliable management plans of valuable species are lacking due to the gap in basic scientific information on their structure and status. The objectives of this work were to study the structural characteristics and the spatial distribution of the abundance of Spondias mombin L. populations in the subequatorial zone of Benin. The data collection was based on the tessellation of study zone with ArcGIS analysis tools. The grid cell used was a square of 100 m side (1ha of surface). The occurrence of species in each grid was obtained using GBIF database. One hundred and seventy-five (175) trees of S. mombin were sampled through the four Phytodistricts of study zone. The main dendrometric variables measured from these individuals were diameter at breast height (1.30 m above ground level) and height. The parameters such as density, mean quadratic diameter, basal area and mean Lorey height were calculated. To study the spatial abundance distribution of S. mombin, we used Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) interpolation method to realize abundance map from the occurrences. The results of structure showed a density of 3 trees/ha. The basal area was 1500 cm2/ha and the mean quadratic diameter was 25.10 cm. The mean of Lorey height obtained was 12 m. The diameter structure showed a predominance of bell-shape distribution with a relative abundance of young individuals. The low numbers of individuals in some diameter classes, the erratic distribution and the presence of old population of S. mombin indicate the strong anthropogenic pressure on the species. The abundance map showed that the species was present in all the phytodistricts and covers 93% of the study area’s municipalities. The conservation strategies, including both the species and its habitat, need to be developed to allow sustainable use of S. mombin.

Abstract: Village land forest reserves (VLFRs) are recognized as an important base for rural community development. This study used timber and honey production activities to assess the actual contribution of three Village land forest reserves of Lupagalo VLFR from Songea District in Ruvuma Region, and Liboya and Luhangino VLFRs from Liwale District in Lindi Region on livelihood improvement rural communities living adjacent to these forests. This study assessed livelihood improvement based on financial, human, physical, and social assets. Data were collected using household structured interviews and focused group discussions. A total of 71 timber dealers (38 in Songea and 33 in Liwale District) and 37 honey dealers (23 in Songea and 14 in Liwale District) were interviewed in this study. Inferential statistics and Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage were used to report the results of this study. Results show that there is gain in livelihood assets due to timber and honey production. In addition, findings reveal that, physical capital indicators including better education, better health care, and food security had significant influence on livelihood of timber and honey dealer as the p-value (p<0.05). In financial capital, savings had a significant influence on the livelihood of honey and timber dealers. Also, training as an indicator of human capital had a significant contribution on the livelihood of honey and timber dealers. Further, based on social capital, membership status had a significant influence on livelihood contribution p<0.05. Since this study considered only two products, other forest products such as firewood, charcoal, and medicinal plants should be assessed.

Abstract: “Nanhai Shengli” is a floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) in the Liuhua 11-1 oil field in the South China Sea. During its service, the FPSO suffered severe broken anchor legs due to the hostile impact of several strong typhoons. In order to ensure the safety of its mooring system, emergency maintenance operations were carried out on 10 mooring anchor legs under the condition of non-release and non-production of FPSO, which was the first time in deep water in China. Its construction is difficult, high risk, weather and FPSO draft time window requirements are high, the use of reasonable technology and construction methods is the key to efficient completion of the operation, such as simulation analysis, reasonable selection of machinery and resources, efficient control of site construction, accurate environmental monitoring, etc. Taking the release and tieback of the mooring system of "Nanhai Shengli" FPSO in Liuhua 11-1 oilfield as an example, various technical difficulties and key points in the process of release and tieback construction are introduced, and the rules are summarized and analyzed. The safe and efficient completion of this construction operation is not only the embodiment of management level, but also the result of daring to innovate and face challenges. It has a typical guiding significance for the maintenance of mooring anchor leg of similar deep-water floating production facilities in China.

Abstract: With the development of outburst prevention technology and the improvement of management level in China's outburst mines in the new era, the classification of outburst coal seams has important guiding significance for the further refinement, improvement, and enhancement of China's outburst mine gas prevention and control system. Therefore, it is necessary to further classify outburst coal seams. Through the analysis of outburst accidents with deaths of more than or equal to 3 people since 2000, a large number of basic gas parameters in the laboratory, and previous research results, in-depth discussions were conducted on the methods and basis for classification of outburst coal seams, as well as related issues such as judgment rules and critical values of indicators. It is proposed to divide outburst coal seams into two levels: ‘general outburst coal seams’ and ‘severe outburst coal seams’. A classification method for outburst coal seams based on outburst strength has been established. The judgment rules for severe outburst coal seams have been established, including the amount of coal thrown out S, the amount of gas emitted per ton of coal Q0 and the number of outburst times N. The critical values of the judgment indicators have been determined. Through the research, it will provide an important basis for the determination of mining procedures, outburst prevention planning and mining replacement planning, etc.
