An Examination of Etho-Poetic Reading Scenes in the Works of Jorge Luis Borges and Pascal Quignard

Abstract: This paper examines reading scenes in the works of Jorge Luis Borges and Pascal Quignard with the objective of studying the thematization and presentation of the etho-poetic aspects of reading in contemporary literature. An introductory chapter presents an overview of recent reading theories and the concept of the ‘reading scene’, which originated in writing studies (Campe, Barthes, Stingelin et al.) as well as the notion of ‘etho-poetics’ (Barthes, Foucault). Thereafter, the analysis turn to two works by Jorge Luis Borges, La biblioteca de Babel and El libro de arena, and then to Pascal Quignard’s Lectio and his novella Le lecteur. The objective of this paper is to define the different ways in which reading and life are intertwined, examining this relationship at three distinct levels: Firstly, at the level of creating literature out of reading, which represents a crucial element of the poetics of both Borges and Quignard. As will be demonstrated, both authors make extensive reference to Proust’s Sur la lecture. Secondly, the relationship between reading experiences and life will be examined in the context of the diegetic world. Thirdly, at the level of the reception, metalepsis functions as a means of inciting the concrete reader to consider reading from an etho-poetic perspective. In addition to these parallels, it can be assumed that in the texts of Borges, the transformative potential of the reading act is depicted as commensurate with the social life of the readers. In contrast, Quignard’s work illustrates the etho-poetic dimension of reading as an asocial practice, dissociating the reader from the social context.

An Analysis of the Protagonist’s Behavior in Herzog from Yi-Fu Tuan’s Escapism

Abstract: The novel Herzog by the American writer Saul Bellow has received wide attention since its publication in 1964. It centers around the protagonist Moses Herzog’s life after his second divorce, in which he is often in a state of uneasiness, going from place to place to avoid problems, writing unsent letters to express dissatisfaction, seeking comfort from others when in trouble, and losing himself in memories when frustrated. According to the Chinese-American humanistic geographer Yi-Fu Tuan’s escapism theory, the behavior is in fact escapism. What Herzog really wants to escape is society, others, and himself, and escaping from place to place or person to person, and creating material world and spiritual world, are the different ways of his escapism. And during the process of escape, with embarrassment, pains, impulse and constant self-introspection, he gradually gains strength, and evolves from negative escapism to positive escapism, temporarily achieving reconciliation with reality. There are many reasons for Herzog’s escapism, among which his American Jewish identity, the turmoil of the American society in 1960s, the decline of the intellectuals’ status and the rise of feminism at that time all play a key role. Herzog’s escapism is actually a product of his time, a process of reconstruction of relationship between male and female, and a seeking-existence journey of an intellectual with different ethnicity in American society, with positive escapism born out of negative one.

Abstract: This research was conducted to study the semiotic relationship between historical men's costumes in modern times from the 17th to the 19th century and some functional (the intended function of the costume) and aesthetic (the art of fashion design) values. From a semiotic perspective, the research sample was determined by studying and analyzing four men's costumes in each of the three centuries. It was divided into four periods from the beginning to the 1920s, from the 1920s to the 1950s, from the 1950s to the 1970s, and from the 1970s to the end of the century. The research relied on the historical-analytical approach in addressing concepts related to the semiotics of historical men's fashion. This research aimed to: Describe and analyze men's fashion in modern eras from the 17th to the 19th century, clarify the symbolic significance of the form of men's fashion clothing in modern eras and its relationship to the functional values represented by the intentional function of the costume from a semiotic perspective and explain the symbolic significance of the form of men's fashion in modern eras and its relationship to the aesthetic values represented in the art of fashion design from a semiotic perspective. The results of the study were the following: The clarity of the symbolic significance of the form of men's fashion clothing and its relationship to the functional values represented in the intentional function of the costume, the aesthetic values defined in the art of fashion design from a semiotic perspective, and the reflection of historical, social, political and religious events, customs and traditions semiotically on the function of men's fashion and the art of its design.
