Towards Sustainable Food Security in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Region: The Role of Population Dynamics

Abstract: This paper explores how population dynamics influence sustainable food security in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development region, one of Africa’s most rapidly growing demographic zones. The study employs a mixed-methods research design, drawing on secondary data from global and regional databases to analyze demographic trends, labour force changes, urbanization, and nutritional outcomes across eight member states from 2010 to 2020. Results indicate that rapid population growth, youthful age structures, and expanding labour forces have intensified demand for food, employment, and social services. Although declining dependency ratios in several countries suggest emerging opportunities for a demographic dividend, these gains are constrained by unemployment, gender inequality, and limited agricultural modernization. The research also identifies growing urbanization as a key factor reshaping food systems, altering consumption patterns, and increasing pressure on supply chains. Despite some improvements, the prevalence of undernourishment remains high in several countries, reflecting structural vulnerabilities linked to poverty, climate variability, and weak institutional capacity. The findings highlight that demographic change is not inherently detrimental; rather, it can support food security if accompanied by investments in education, youth employment, gender empowerment, and climate-resilient agriculture. The study concludes that sustainable food security in the IGAD region requires integrated demographic and development policies, strengthened regional cooperation, and improved data-driven planning to transform population growth into a catalyst for inclusive and resilient development.

Abstract: Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a diverse bacterium commonly found in the intestinal tract of humans and animals. While many strains are harmless, pathogenic variants such as enterotoxigenic (ETEC), enterohemorrhagic (EHEC), and avian pathogenic (APEC) strains cause significant health problems in humans and livestock. In Pakistan, E. coli infections are especially problematic in the poultry and dairy industries, where they cause economic losses through mortality, decreased productivity, and increasing antibiotic resistance. The overuse of antibiotics has further intensified the problem, making vaccine development an important alternative preventive strategy. This review summarizes current approaches to E. coli vaccine development, including inactivated vaccines, attenuated vaccines, recombinant protein-based vaccines, DNA vaccines, and autogenous farm-specific vaccines. Each approach is considered in terms of its mechanism, potential advantages, limitations, and applicability to different E. coli pathotypes. Particular attention is given to antigenic diversity, mucosal immunity, antimicrobial resistance, and the need for vaccines adapted to strains circulating in Pakistan. The review also discusses recent international progress, research gaps, infrastructure limitations, and future priorities. Developing effective and locally relevant E. coli vaccines could reduce antibiotic reliance, improve animal and public health, strengthen farm biosecurity, and support microbiological research and vaccine innovation in Pakistan. The review emphasizes that vaccine performance varies with pathogen type, antigen selection, delivery route, and the ability to induce durable protective immunity.

Abstract: Micronutrient malnutrition remains a major global nutrition problem, particularly in populations whose diets depend heavily on staple crops. Iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and vitamin A deficiencies can adversely affect growth, immunity, cognitive development, and overall health. Crop biofortification provides a sustainable breeding-based strategy for increasing the concentration of essential nutrients in commonly consumed foods. This review examines the application of marker-assisted selection (MAS) in the development of Fe-, Zn-, and provitamin A (PVA)-rich staple crops. Relevant peer-reviewed literature, scientific reviews, and institutional publications were examined using major academic databases and search platforms, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Particular attention was given to the genetic basis of micronutrient accumulation, molecular markers, marker-assisted backcrossing, marker-assisted recurrent selection, gene pyramiding, and recent applications in maize, rice, wheat, pearl millet, cassava, and other staple crops. Evidence from breeding programs indicates that MAS can improve the efficiency of selecting favorable alleles and can facilitate the introgression and combination of nutrient-associated genes and quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Major targets include crtRB1 and lcyE for PVA accumulation in maize, genomic regions associated with grain Fe and Zn in cereals, and nutrient-related loci in rice and cassava. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of MAS can be constrained by the quantitative inheritance of micronutrient traits, genotype × environment interactions, marker–gene recombination, limited genomic resources in some crops, and differences in nutrient bioavailability. Future breeding strategies should integrate MAS with genomic selection, high-throughput phenotyping, speed breeding, gene editing, and climate-resilient breeding. Overall, MAS represents an important component of modern biofortification programs and can contribute to the development of nutritionally improved, productive, and farmer-acceptable staple crop varieties.

Modeling Tilt Angles of Sunspot Groups as a Function of Latitude to Forecast the Next Solar Cycle Amplitude

Abstract: Background: The amplitude of the solar cycle governs space weather and terrestrial climate impacts, yet current forecasting methods exhibit limited skill. The Babcock–Leighton dynamo mechanism posits that the tilt angles of sunspot groups (Joy's law) generate the poloidal field that seeds the next cycle's toroidal field, establishing a physical basis for prediction. Purpose: This study investigates whether latitude-resolved tilt angle measurements improve forecast skill compared to global tilt averages, and identifies which latitude bands carry the dominant predictive signal. Methods: We analyzed sunspot group tilt angles from Cycles 15–24 using data from Kodaikanal, Mount Wilson, Debrecen, and SDO/HMI observatories. Groups were binned into 5° latitude bands from 0°–40°. A multi-band linear regression model was developed and validated using leave-one-out cross-validation, with performance compared against global tilt averages and polar field strength precursors. Findings: Low-latitude bands (0°–15°) exhibit strong positive correlations with following cycle amplitude (r = 0.85–0.90), while high-latitude bands (>25°) show negative correlations. The latitude-resolved model achieves near-perfect retrospective skill (r = 1.000, RMSE = 1.6), representing a 62% reduction in prediction error compared to global tilt averages. The 0°–15° bands alone account for 92% of total predictive power. Cycle 25 is forecast at 85.0 ± 4.2. Conclusion: Latitude-resolved tilt analysis substantially outperforms global averaging. Low-latitude tilt angles are the dominant predictor. Recommendation: Operational forecasts should adopt latitude-weighted indices emphasizing active regions below 15° latitude.

Abstract: The assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in January 2020 marked a pivotal moment in Middle Eastern geopolitics, disrupting the balance of power among state and non-state actors across the region. Despite growing scholarly attention to the immediate aftermath of his death, limited research has systematically examined its longer-term, cumulative effects on regional alliances, conflict dynamics, and strategic realignments. This study addresses that gap by investigating how al-Muhandis' martyrdom has continued to shape geopolitical developments in Iraq and the broader Middle East in the years since. The research adopts a pragmatic, qualitative approach, drawing on historical analysis, examination of political dynamics, and stakeholder perspectives to trace shifts in power structures, alliance formations, and conflict trajectories linked to this event. Data were gathered through document analysis, review of political and media discourse, and scenario-based assessment, enabling a multidimensional evaluation of both immediate and evolving consequences. Findings indicate that al-Muhandis' death intensified competition among regional actors, accelerated shifts in militia-state relations within Iraq, and reshaped the strategic calculations of both regional and international stakeholders, with effects that continue to reverberate through ongoing conflicts and diplomatic realignments. The study concludes that individual, high-profile political killings can generate durable structural effects on regional stability, extending well beyond their immediate aftermath. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between targeted political violence and geopolitical transformation, offering insights relevant to policymakers, security analysts, and scholars engaged in Middle Eastern studies. The study further recommends continued monitoring of the long-term ramifications of such events for regional security frameworks.
