Abstract: Brothers, the English translation of Xiong di, is an important work of Chinese contemporary avant-garde writer Yu Hua. After its English version was published in 2009, it has received rave reviews in the English-speaking world. This article, guided by George Steiner's hermeneutics translation theory, takes comparative analysis to analyze the translation strategies of the translators in the process of the four-fold hermeneutic motion proposed by Steiner. Based on the comparison of the concrete examples in the source and target text, a conclusion can be raised that the translators have made the full use of translator’s initiative in the four steps (trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation) to achieve a dynamic balance between domestication and foreignization by taking the target readers' acceptability and the effectiveness of cultural communications into consideration.

Abstract: This paper aims to explore the translation theories developed after War War II and to discuss the strategies applied by translators. Regarding the starting date of this study, it is important to note that translation was recognised as a scientific area of study in tertiary education institutions in Western Europe after World War II. Since then, several theories including linguistic theories, literary theories as well as the Translation Studies theory, the interpretative theory, the action theory, the Skopos theory, the functional theory, the polysystem theory, the feminist theory and the post-colonial theory have been developed. As far as translation strategies are concerned, three types, namely syntactic strategies, semantic strategies and pragmatic strategies, are discussed. The method adopted in this paper is both theoretical and descriptive. The findings of the paper are that translation theories are just like a centuries-old story about six blind men from Hindustan who were tasked with determining what an elephant looked like by feeling different parts of the elephant’s body. The one who touched the leg said that an elephant was like a pillar. The one who felt the tail observed that an elephant was like a rope. The one who felt the trunk concluded that it was like a tree branch, etc. Indeed, there is a need to take a holistic approach to translation, which would combine all these theories into a single and more coherent whole. As regards the strategies, there are points of connection between syntax and semantics.

Measuring Cognitive Effort with Translation Process Database

Abstract: The analysis and measurement of cognitive effort could be complicated when involved in translation production. And it therefore attracts researchers’ great attention to the investigation of this topic. Different from traditional data collection methods, the Translation Process Research Database (TPR-DB) utilizes the large corpus to record the translation process, including translation process data (e.g. keystrokes, fixations, mouse movements) and translation product data (e.g. ST, TT and links between tokens in both texts) from more than ten language pairs and dozens of translation and associated studies. After reviewing the studies and some findings on measuring cognitive effort with the TPR-DB, the present study proposes that features of HTra, HCross, AUs and PWR in the TPR-DB tables are frequently used as indicators for the measurement of cognitive effort during translation and post-editing processes. The attempts to measure cognitive effort with the TPR-DB have not only yielded some interesting findings but also added fresh insights to facilitate understanding and examination of cognitive effort. The present study pointed out that the TPR-DB provides a new and effective method to measure cognitive effort. It will further support and promote the future research in this field.

Abstract: This paper falls within a wider project which seeks to see how the development in Phonology as a component of modern Linguistics can help in the field of English language teaching. For instance I tried to compare Moroccan Arabic as a mother tongue of a large number of Moroccans and English as a foreign language in the Moroccan context. More specifically, I attempted an analysis of both languages as concerns the status of schwa and tried to see what this comparison can offer to the field of EFL in the Moroccan context. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to analyse the status of schwa using tools provided by the Optimality Theory and compare it to the same vowel in English and see how this affects Moroccan students learning English. To clarify more, a constraint a La OT which bans schwa open syllables ranks high in Moroccan Arabic, and, thus, does not permit the occurrence of schwa open syllables; while the same constraint ranks low in the constraint hierarchy in English, and hence schwa open syllables are so frequent in the language. It was found that the differences between the two languages, as far as schwa is concerned, can be an obstacle in front of Moroccans learning English. Thus, I tried to devise hands-on activities that will focus on these differences and provide ways to overcome problems they create for EFL learners. The findings in this study have implications for researchers in ELT, namely that differences as far as the phonology of Arabic and that of English can be an obstacle in front of English learners. Hence, they should consider that in syllabus and textbook design.
