About This Special Issue
“3D display and imaging” is a promising research field for its attractive benefits and applications in the 3D display industries including the medical imaging sectors. A stereoscopic technique has been used most widely for 3D displays because it is relatively easy to realize high image resolution and large image size. However, the stereoscopic technique usually requires supplementary glasses or tracking devices to realize the 3D visual effect to the observers and it provides only horizontal parallax. Also the stereoscopic displays make a discomfort to the observers like an eye fatigue. On the other hand, autostereoscopic displays such as holography, integral photography, multi-view display etc. do not require any special devices to realize the 3D scenes. Although those autostereoscopic techniques have a numerous attractive benefits, but they have some major drawbacks like insufficient image resolution, limited viewing angle and shallow image depth etc. Nowadays holography is an exciting tool for autostereoscopic displays and has been well studying for 3D displays because of its attractive advantages. In recent years, integral photography which is now called integral imaging has attracted a great deal of attention because of its full-color full-parallax moving 3D images that distinguish it from other conventional 3D display technologies.
