About This Special Issue
Generally, gift plays important role in improving a society. In its wider scope, gift includes philanthropy, waqf, endowment, donation, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and donation (gift). All sort of gifts generate income and financial assistances to society. In the Western world, Harvard University had generated billion of dollars in the form of endowment for higher education worldwide whereas in the Islamic world, Al-Azhar University in Cairo had grown up and established waqf higher institutions significantly. Similarly, waqf had assisted many governments such as in Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia and other countries to set up school, mosque, universities and recreational places worldwide. Alongside the importance of waqf and endowment, the other form of gift such as corporate social responsibilities (CSR) and donation also play important roles in generating income and economy of the society. For example, TATA Group of companies had contributed a lot to eliminate poverty in India. In Malaysia, billions of dollars had been poured in by a number of companies in terms of relief aids to improve and mitigate flooding in 2014. Similarly, billions of dollars had also been donated to reconstruct post-earthquakes in Yogyakarta, Indonesia recently. Therefore, the special issue is designed to highlight the importance of gift and the way in which it helps generate the economy of society by eliminating poverty, increase access to higher education, increase food production, improving public amenities, mitigate disaster and upgrading human life.
