Abstract: Lycium barbarum has a radical place in traditional Chinese medicine, also draws attention due to the potential health benefits in recent years. The antioxidant effects of Lycium barbarum have been studied in many aspects: as an anti-aging agent, for general health protection, against tumor growth, for the development of the immune system regulatory, to develop vision, and to protect against cancer and diabetes. High amounts of polysaccharide and carotenoid content are the main components of the antioxidant activity. The structure also contains a high percentage of B group vitamins, such as B1, B2, B6, and minerals, such as Fe, Zn, and Cu. Although it is natively grown in China and other Asian countries, it’s also cultivated in the Mediterranean countries, North America, and Australia. In this study, the components of Lycium barbarum, their properties, and its positive and negative effects on human health are presented.

Abstract: Biological marker changes during pregnancy and adequate reference values are of importance for correct clinical decisions. There are only few studies on the variations of laboratory tests during normal pregnancies, especially during the first trimesters. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of pregnancy in the first trimester on several biochemical parameters in healthy pregnant women by comparing the values of these parameters with non-pregnant women. Blood samples were taken from 30healthy pregnant women and 30non-pregnant women. Glucose, Total protein (TP), Albumin, Total bilirubin (TB), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Aspartate transaminase(AST), Alanine transaminase(ALT), Gamma glutamyl transferase(GGT), Cortisol and Phosphatewere measured. the result shows that a pregnant affected in serum total bilirubin, Aspartate transaminase, Cortisol. It recorded a significance decrease in total bilirubin and Aspartate transaminase in pregnant women compared with non-pregnant women, While the pregnant caused significant increase in Cortisol compared with non-pregnant women.

Abstract: Despite the availability of highly effective methods of contraception, many pregnancies are unplanned and unwanted. These pregnancies carry a higher risk of morbidity and mortality, often due to unsafe abortion. Many of these unplanned pregnancies can be avoided using emergency contraception. Literature reveals that there is existence of knowledge, attitude and practice gaps on emergency contraception in the world including Ethiopia. This study was designed to assess knowledge, attitude and practice towards emergency contraceptive methods among female students in Abdisa Aga high school Fitche town, North shewa, Ethiopia. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 258 female students in Abdisa Aga high school Fiche town, north shewa, Ethiopia from 19/12/2015-30/08/2016. Study populations was selected from different educational levels (9th & 10th) using stratified random sampling technique. Data was edited, tallied and analyzed manually by using scientific calculator and was presented in texts, tables, and figures. In this study, 258 female students were participated. Out of them 235(91.1%) were between the age of 14-18 years. One hundred ninety (73.6%) of them were Oromo Ethnic group. Two hundred forty seven (95.7%) of those respondents were unmarried. Eighty eight (34.1%) had heard about emergency contraceptive, 45(51.1%) of them mentioned the correct recommended timing for oral pills of emergency contraception use. About 96(37.2%) of respondents had a history of sexual intercourse, and only 11(34.4%) of them used emergency contraceptives (ECs). In general knowledge of emergency contraceptive (EC) is low, the major source of information were mass media TV/radio. The majority of students those heard of Emergency contraceptives had no knowledge of the correct time limit to Emergency Pills and Intrauterine Contraceptive Device. Lack of information about emergency contraceptive could be barrier from being utilization by individual who need Emergency contraceptives (ECs) and this lead to unintended pregnancy. The study recommends that academic institution and health bureaus should work on the promotion and enhancement of health education about emergency contraceptive among students of high school.

Abstract: The present study sought to develop a blueprint for the identification of phyto-chemicals present in the methanol leaves extract of Cissus multistriata by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and test its antivenom activities against Naja nigricollis venom in male rats. Powdered leaves of C. multistriata were extracted using 50% methanol. FTIR analysis was carried out using SHIMADZU FTIR-8400S while GC-MS analysis was carried out using a SHIMADZU Japan GCMS-QP2010 PLUS mass spectrometer coupled to a SHIMADZU gas chromatograph. The antivenom property of the plant was tested by intraperitoneal (i. p.) injection of the extract at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight of rats. Venom was administered i. p. at a dose of 1 mg/kg body weight of rats after 30 minutes. The IR spectrum suggested the presence of methyl, hydroxyl and unsaturated carbon-carbon double bonds in the bioactive compounds of the leaf extract. Two likely compounds as derived from the GC-MS chart are 2-(2-hydroxypropyl)-1,4-benzenediol, 2, 6, 8-Trimethylbicyclo[4, 2, 0]oct-2-ene-1,8-diol. Envenomation with N. nigricollis venom led to significant decreases in the levels of total protein and albumin with concomitant increase in creatinine, urea and uric acid levels. The plasma activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate amino transaminase (AST), and alkaline amino transferase (ALT) were significantly increased as well as the serum levels of sodium, potassium and chloride in rats challenged with venom compared with control rats. The above results indicate that C. multistriata contains numerous bioactive compounds and can neutralize N. nigricollis snake venom.
