Geographic Information System and Mapping of Urban Solid Waste Collection Routes and Their Impacts on the Ngor Coastline, Senegal

Abstract

The coastal zone forms a narrow band, a few hundred to a few thousand meters wide, on either side of the shoreline. This coastal zone represents approximately 8% of the Earth's surface. Our coastlines are victims of all sorts of nuisances: sea level rise, coastal erosion, marine sand extraction, and pollution with the discharge of various pollutants (industrial and domestic wastewater as well as solid waste). The objective of this contribution is to develop a Geographic Information System for the daily monitoring of urban solid waste collection routes on the Ngor coastline. The methodology used is based on mapping the household solid waste collection routes along the coastline, combined with qualitative and quantitative data collection and GPS surveying in the study area. The observation is that the proportion of waste is the most striking factor on the Ngor coastline. This leads to the beaches being deserted due to the presence of garbage surrounding them. This situation results from the lack of an adequate sanitation system on the Ngor coastline and its environmental impacts. This article is structured as follows: firstly, the history of waste collection; secondly, the mapping of collection routes; and finally, the environmental impacts on the coastline. Ngor.
